Aquapharm's culture collection represents a global snap-shot of
the ocean's microbial diversity.
To ensure it has captured the incredible diversity of the marine
environment, Aquapharm has sampled ecological habitats ranging from
shallow brackish waters off the UK coast to the cold oceanic depths
of the Arctic Sea as well as both tropical and sub-tropical
locations.
The company has been able to culture previously unculturable
microbes, expanding on the number of strains that could typically
be obtained from a standard sample, and has built a substantial and
productive collection of over 8,750 marine bacteria and fungi,
containing more than 30% of new species and genera. This microbial
collection is central to the company's discovery activities and is
continually being added to through additional sampling
missions.
Aquapharm's microbial database contains information on the
source location, culture conditions, chemistry and activity profile
which allows for the intelligent selection of the most suitable
microbes for a biological activity of interest.
